The subject of the Competition was the design of the new Brno main train station, including roofing and platform design, interior layout design, location of the main passenger hall, facade of railway buildings, appearance of the railway body, design of bridge structures and related public spaces in the detail level of an urban-transport-architectural study.
Part of the design has been also to find the optimal location and appearance of the bus station, public transport transfer terminal, parking lots, taxi service stations and bicycle storage. The proposal must take into account both their connection to the urban transport network and their interconnections, especially with regard to the quality of pedestrian movement and pedestrian access through the railway body and, last but not least, the links to the urban structure of the new district.
The design has also included a complete solution of the station forecourt and the area behind the station, including buildings according to the construction programme.
Seeing as it is a place located on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), the construction will, with its significance and purpose, significantly exceed the city borders and it will also be an important transport terminal for all types of public transport. This important public building will become not only the new entrance gate to the city of Brno, but also the Centre of a new district south of the historic city centre.
The objective of the Competition was to find a comprehensive solution for a transport hub that will be comfortable for passengers, become part of the city’s urban structure and image, and at the same time offer an attractive and public space in its vicinity.

The new station will become the catalyst of the new urban development of Jižní čtvrť along the Svratka river. The reuse of the old railway viaduct in a public park, the monumental boulevard linking the new station to the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul and the urban fabric that connects the new city of Jižní čtvrť to the redesigned banks of the river are the result of a strong desire to mentally and physically develop the station quarter and the new city as an integral part of Brno. Brno's new main station convincingly meets the four key criteria that are crucial for the success of modern European train stations.

The new Brno district built on the principle of urbanism of European cities integrates the station into both the territory and history of Brno. The station does not merely neighbor the landscape along Svratka and the traffic node, but they constitute an urban complex. They form a single organism, which they are a part of – teammates sharing the mutually generated energy. At the same time, its frame is simple yet robust, and as such it can adapt to the needs of Brno’s future development, which we do not even know today.

This development now gives the opportunity to design one of the most modern train stations in the world, which will fundamentally affect the future development of Brno positively well into the distant future. The station will be a signature for the city of Brno, the heart of the new city development for the 21st century. A sustainable, urban hub of European significance that connects BRNO within the network of European metropoles. It will be a net plus, green energy producing, urban, mobility hub. It will be a connection of old and new BRNO, an urban hinge that links the view corridor from Petrov with the Svratka River.
